Layer via copy

1.     Create a selection and then copy (Command +C / Ctrl +C) and paste (Command +V / Ctrl+V). creates a duplicate of the selected area in a new layer with the default name layer # (where the numbers are sequential, starting with 1).

2.     Choose Layer > New>Layer via copy or press Command +J / Ctrl+J with a selection active. Duplicates selected area to a new layer with the default name layer# (where the numbers are sequential, starting with 1).

3.     Press command +option+selection+E / Ctrl +Alt+Shift+E. Merges visible Layer content to a new layer with the default name Layer# (where the numbers are sequential, starting with 1). The new layer appears above the currently active layer (if a layer is active) or at the top of the layer stack.
